Studio Self Portrait

Working from direct observation in the mirror I was in the middle of my subject; the studio. To the upper left of my head you see a post card of Caravaggio’s Deposition, to the right a dragonfly honoring Whistler. I am dressed in blue to honor Gwen John because when I come inside from painting I feel like I am in one of her paintings. My hand is holding a brush but it is to recall Rembrandt’s Woman with the pink… all around me inside and out of the mirror my own works are reflected. The painting of lilies is from a dream and I loved making paintings of my paintings. I wanted the painting to feel loose, scrubbed of the world and yet refined. I am in my studio quiet yet attentive and looking carefully.
