Most of my work centers around my emotional state and relationship with the world and I, like so many artists right now, have felt that it is important to document this strange time of quarantine and isolation. While isolation is not at all foreign to me this experience of externally imposed isolation combined with this chaotic and vaguely surreal news cycle is wholly new.
“Murmur” is a representation of my experience and feelings during this pandemic and while I have completed a number of larger pieces and conceptualized, and completed many smaller works during this period, this painting is the first larger piece that I began planning and then completed while already deep in the pandemic. It is meant to encapsulate both the boredom, and drama of this moment and to convey the conflict between our urge to be constantly consuming the information and content that are perpetually hurtling our way and the need for balance and distance from this assault of information, this tension between our inner voices and selves and the external barrage.
It was painted in oil on stretched linen.
