Dear Gram

Dear Gram, Selfie of the Artist
Dear Gram
I created this painting as a letter to my grandmother. I was raised by my grandmother and although she passed away many years ago I continue to practice to writing to her. As a way to stay connected to her, talk with her, and let her know about my life events and work I write letters to her. I save these letters and go back to them when I want to reflect on the words I wrote. This painting includes one of those letters embedded in the painting. The text was hand written on the blank canvas, which I then painted over the text with our portraits in oil (an old photograph of us together and a current self-portrait). I intentionally wanted to conceal the letter because I believe artwork doesn't have to give everything away, the practice of writing was for my process and healing. However, the text is slightly raised and some of the words and sentences can be seen under the right kind of lighting. The viewer is able to peak into some of my letter, interpret the deeply personal context, and appreciate the relationship between grandparent and grandchild.
