Plein Air Painting at Wistman's Wood
This painting describes a scene when the artist paints outside at the Wistman's wood in England. It's a scene of tranquillity and of a mysterious quality. These woods, with its old oak trees, and closed canopies, have a magical feel about them, invoking an aspect of tales and myths. The scene portrays a preserved natural-looking forest, with evidence of human touch, as if it were an altar of some sort. This connection with nature and the mysterious has influenced the traditional British and European folklore for millennia. This painting, however, brings the scene to our current time, portraying the artist with modern clothes, breaking the idea of the old, whilst portraying the ever-present desire of the artists to connect with the world around them. In this case, by studying and representing nature and history on the artwork.
